From Detroit Michigan, Jazzy LG (Larry Griggs) discovered his love of music at the age of 12. He used to walk around with a portable Casio keyboard, and discovered he could play back popular songs from the radio from memory, one note at a time. This discovery eventually led to a desire to expand on his talent, as he took lessons in middle school, playing the alto clarinet, and learning basic music theory. Being raised by a single parent, after leaving Detroit, and moving to Columbus, Ohio, his options were limited. He wanted to participate in Sports, but they were hard to commit to, as times were tough financially. He knew survival came first, so he had to work while going to school to help his mother make ends meet. He later joined the military, still clinging to the dream of music fame and fortune, meeting a multitude of talented artists and producers from around the country, and even running into Phillip Bailey (Earth Wind and Fire) at a Denver Airport on the way to Basic Training. Only fragments of his dream ever truly surfaced, while opening up for Hip hop legends Krs-One, and Ice Tee in San Antonio, Texas, June of 1985. Krs-One actually wanted to take some of his music back to New York, but alas, with no real knowledge of the industry, that didn’t happen. Ice Tee called their group ‘the next generation of hip hop’, due to their (rapping and singing, while playing live music, supplemented by a DJ). The direction of his style at that time was rudimentary and vague. It primarily consisted of ‘club tracks’, ‘money’ and ‘hoes’, (most of which you hear on the radio today) which left him with an empty feeling. Having been raised in the church, he came to realize his true style and calling, gospel music. Not traditional gospel music though: the same vibe that you would get from mainstream industry artists: nice beats, smooth harmonies, catchy hooks, crisp production and engineering, but with a message focused on hope and redemption. Ironically, his estranged father, during his entire musical journey, had withheld a vital piece of information that could have shaved 20 years off of his lifetime struggle to ‘catch a break’. It was revealed on father’s day 2007, that Jazzy was in fact related to none other than the founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy! (He is a first cousin). This revelation was absolutely mind blowing. It seemed like a cruel joke, or twist of fate. However, due to the fact that his music now had a dedicated path and a calling much higher than fame or financial gain, it became a moot point. A higher power was definitely at work, and his path was clear. He makes music to inspire, with a path to greatness that is measured by inspiring the greatness in others.
